Tulalips city meet as equals

JULY 26, 2000

The Tulalip Tribes of Washington and the city of Schell have signed an agreement respecting each other as equals and pledging to work together on issues such as water rights, salmon recovery, and protection of archaeological resources.

The agreement is being seen as historic and officials from both governments hope this will lead to better relationships between tribes and local governments all throughout the country.

The agreement also appears significant, given the amount of focus the state has received due to a recent Washington State Republican Party resolution calling for the termination of "non-republican" tribal governments.

The tribe wants to sign similar agreements with other local governments.
