The Northeastern Connecticut Council of Government has scheduled a public meeting next month to discuss myths, rumors and facts about federal recognition.

Executive Director John Filchak said there are many false conceptions about what federal recognition means. The meeting will give residents a chance to become informed, he said.

The meeting will also focus on the Nipmuc Nation of Massachusetts whose federal recognition status is on hold at the Department of Interior. Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb will be reviewing the tribe's status and decide if he will grant them preliminary recognition, after which a final determination might be made.

The tribe says it wants to build a casino. A location has not been decided but the northeastern part of Connecticut is a potential site.
