Navajo community fights negative label

MONDAY, JULY 30, 2001

The recent arrests of three Navajo men from the To'hajiilee Navajo Reservation has brought the community's label as a haven of violent activity.

By any number of accounts, the reservation may have deserved the title. Four years ago, there was little police presence as gang members from nearby Albuquerque wreaked havoc on the local community.

The reservation now has three full time officers and residents are now helping police respond to fights, parties and other activities. The court has become more tough on offenders.

The 125-square-mile reservation is located 150 miles east of the capitol of the Navajo Nation and 26 miles west of Albuquerque. It has about 2,800 residents.
