AUGUST 14, 2000 The Bureau of Indian Affairs must determine thoroughly whether or not a 46-acre property in Albuquerque owned by New Mexico's 19 Pueblos is Indian Country. Chief U.S. District Judge John Edwards Conway has asked the agency to clarify its ruling to take the land into trust for the Pueblos. The land housed the former Indian School, run by the All Indian Pueblo Council, who closed it in the early 1980s. In April, a New Mexico Judge ruled that the Santa Fe Indian School land, also owned by the 19 Pueblos, is Indian Country. Get the Story:
