Towns want tribe under state regulation

FRIDAY, AUGUST 17, 2001

Even though the settlement act which extended federal recognition to the tribe doesn't apply to state regulations, three Connecticut towns want the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation to adhered to local zoning and planning rules.

The 1983 Mashantucket Pequot Settlement Act gives the state criminal and civil jurisdiction over the tribe. It, however, does not allow the state or local communities to regulate the tribe's activities.

The towns and the tribe will meet on Monday to discuss trust land. The towns have opposed land-into-trust applications by the tribe.

The tribe is willing to limit applications to 880 acres for the next 35 years.
