State wants Pequot map probe
AUGUST 2, 2000

State and local officials in Connecticut are renewing their call on their Congressional delegation to begin a probe into the map used in defining the boundaries of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation.

THe map was used by Congress in enacting the 1983 Mashantucket Pequot Settlement Act, which settled the tribe's outstanding land claims and granted them federal recognition. But no one has been able to find an original of the map.

The towns of Ledyard, Preston, and North Stonington believe finding the map will help vindicate their case against the tribe. They believe the Act gave more land to the tribe than they deserved.
