THURSDAY, AUGUST 2, 2001

The criminal justice system in Nebraska treats rural and urban offenders differently but does not discriminate on race when it comes to the death penalty, according to a study released on Wednesday.

The study, commissioned by the state Legislature, also shows that offenders whose victims were affluent are more likely to get the death penalty.

One American Indian was put on death penalty in the state during the years 1973 and 1999, according to the study.
