Recognition decision delayed

AUGUST 25, 2000

The Bureau of Indian Affairs has delayed the finding on the federal recognition status of the Golden Hill Paugussett Tribe of Connecticut until sometime next year.

The delay is related to a challenge by the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation, another Connecticut-recognized tribe, against the Paugussett petition. Earlier this month, the BIA said the Schaghticoke couldn't have their petition considered at the same time as the Paugussett, since the bloodlines weren't common.

The New London Day says the delay is a "significant step" regarding recognition since the Paugussett decision will be made when Kevin Gover is out of office.

Kevin Gover has already recused himself from the Paugussett petition.
