Sun dance planned after site destroyed

THURSDAY, AUGUST 30, 2001

A sun dance is being planned at a site near one recently bulldozed by the Hopi Tribe of Arizona.

The tribe bulldozed the site because local Navajo families were holding the dance without permission. The tribe requires a permit because of concern of environmental impact to the land when large groups of people gather for any type of event.

The sun dance is a traditional Lakota ceremony but was reportedly brought to the Big Mountain area of the Hopi Reservation by American Indian Movement members.

Several Navajo families who live on Hopi owned land have supported the dance. The families refuse to recognize the jurisdiction of the Hopi tribe.
