Legislator wants tribes to pay for jails

SEPTEMBER 11, 2000 South Dakota State Representative Bill Napoli wants tribes in the state to pay for the cost of housing tribal members who are inmates in prisons off the reservation. Napoli's policy would be voluntary. But he said tribes need to share the costs other governments pay. A lawyer for the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe said his proposal is like asking one state to pay for the jailing costs of another. Get the Story:
