SEPTEMBER 14, 2000 A state document possessed by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut may end the controversy over their lineage, according to James Lynch, who has earlier has said the ancestors of the current membership are not Pequot either. Lynch said he wants to examine the document, which identifies Sally George and her family as members of the Western Pequot tribe. Sally George is the sister of Austin, the great-great-great-grandfather of present Chairman Kenny Reels, as well as an ancestor of other tribal members. Lynch has done genealogical work for three local towns who oppose the federal recognition of two Eastern Pequot tribe and for Jeff Benedict, author of Without Reservation. His work on the Eastern Pequot tribes, however, has been criticized for being faulty and unreliable by one researcher at the Bureau of Acknowledgement and Research (BAR). The BAR evaluates petitions of groups wishing to receive federal recognition. Meanwhile, the Mashantucket tribe said they want to meet with the state of Connecticut to discuss the care and preservation of historical documents. Get the Story:
