Pequot Tribe wants new meeting date

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 2001

The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation wants to meet October 9 with the leaders of three towns to continue discussing land-into-trust issues.

Previously suggested dates haven't worked out for either the towns or the tribe. Pequot Chairman Kenneth Reels says the tribe is eager to let voters of Ledyard, North Stonington and Preston decide on a proposal to limit land-into-trust applications to 880 acres over the next 35 years.

Town leaders have said the proposal leaves questions unanswered. Reels has sent them a letter, hoping to address some of the remaining concerns.

The 880-acre limit applies to land outside the boundaries described by the 1983 Mashantucket Pequot Settlement Act. The act settled the tribe's land claims in exchange for federal recognition.
