Four tribes in South Dakota have received $1.2 million in grants from the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS), part of the Justice Department.

The grants will help hire new officers and buy equipment for the tribes' law enforcement. The Crow Creek Sioux Tribe ($345,000), the Rosebud Sioux Tribe ($160,000 and $539,000), the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe ($73,000) and the Yankton Sioux Tribe ($104,000) have received grants.

The COPS program has been proposed to be phased out by the Bush administration.
