In support of its attempt to gain federal recognition, the Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribe has submitted evidence claiming to be the sole survivor of the historic Eastern Pequot Tribe.

In contrast, the documents claim, the current membership of the Eastern Pequot Tribe is not a real tribe. The Paucatuck documentation claims the rival group was formed only to gain the benefits associated with a federally recognized tribe.

Both the Eastern Pequot Tribe and the Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribe have received preliminary recognition from the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb is set to make a decision on the tribes by the end of the year.
