Pequot meeting with foes delayed

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 2001

The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation on Thursday said it can't meet with three Connecticut towns on September 10.

The towns had asked the tribe to meet as part of their ongoing discussions on trust land. The tribe had actually wanted to meet at an earlier date, but the towns asked for the delay.

The towns of Preston, Ledyard and North Stonington oppose attempts by the tribe to seek trust lands. The tribe is offering to limit land-into-trust applications to 880 acres for the next 35 years but town leaders say the proposal is not enough.
