Solutions to trust land dispute discussed

Leaders of three Connecticut towns met with their Congressional delegation to discuss whether the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation should be allowed to seek more trust land.

Noticeably, the tribe was not invited to the meeting. That didn't stop some from criticizing the tribe, including Rep. Christopher Shays (R-Conn.), for recnetly failed talks on the issue, even though it was two of the towns who dropped out.

The tribe had no comment on the meeting but in the past, Chairman Kenneth Reels has said any attempts to revisit the 1983 Mashantucket Pequot Settlement Claims Settlement Act have to involve the tribe. The act was an agreement, he said, so any changes must include the tribe.

Ledyard, North Stonington and Preston believe the tribe can't seek more trust land. A federal appeals court denied their argument but they kept pushing it on the tribe during talks arranged by Rep. Rob Simmons (R-Conn.)
