The Crow Tribe of Montana will inaugurate new government positions today, changes that were heralded in by a constitution approved in July.

The constitution creates a legislative branch composed of 18 lawmakers from various districts on the reservation. They were chosen by a special vote in October and will serve two-year or four-year terms.

The same vote also installed a new vice-secretary, who will serve four years, as will all other executive officials. Previously, the term lasted only two years.

A chief judge was also elected for four years.

Some dissident tribal members have said the constitution was not approved properly. According to the tribe, the Bureau of Indian Affairs has accepted the document.
