In what might be considered the shortest tribal takeover in Indian Country history, dissident members of the Crow Tribe of Montana ended their peaceful occupation of tribal headquarters on Tuesday night.

The decision came after the group met with regional Bureau of Indian Affairs officials to discuss recent changes to the tribe's constitution. Acting Rocky Mountain Regional Director William Benjamin said the BIA would review the modifications.

The occupation began on Monday at noon while Chairman Clifford Bird in Ground and other tribal leaders were at another location about a mile away, inaugurating officials whose legality is being questioned by the opposition group.

A spokesperson for Bird in Ground said tribal business would resume today.
