FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 2001

The Crow Tribe of Montana on Thursday arrested and jailed two members who participated in a brief but peaceful takeover of tribal headquarters earlier this week.

Arlo Stray Calf-Dawes and Robert Nomee were placed in a tribal jail on charges of failure to disperse, criminal mischief, criminal trespass, public nuisance and disorderly conduct, said their spokesperson. Both were expected to post a $575 bond last night, The Billings Gazette reported.

The occupation of headquarters was in response to conflicts over recent changes to the tribe's constitution. Opposition leaders claim the modifications are illegal until resolves by the Department of Interior.

Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb said he will help sort out the mess.
