Utah says tribe not real

The state of Utah is asking a federal appeals court to dismiss a lawsuit filed by the Timpanogos Tribe over hunting permits.

The state claims the tribe is not federal recognized even though it has lived on the Uintah-Ouray Ute Indian Reservation for more than one hundred years. Therefore, the state says it should be allowed to prosecute anyone who hunts on the reservation without a state license.

The tribe shares the reservation with the Northern Ute Tribe. The tribe has so far been able to stop the state from prosecuting anyone.
