A Connecticut group claiming to be a sovereign tribe has formed its own motor vehicle division, issuing license plates and registrations.

The Mohegan Tribe and Nation Inc., Confederation of the Mohegan-Pequot American Indian Nation and Affiliated Tribes has been engaged in a conflict over fines and taxes on a parcel of property the group owns in the city of Norwich. The group claims the building is sovereign territory and that the state and local government have no jurisdiction there.

The group is not recognized by the state or the federal government.
