Oneida land claim talks resume

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 23, 2002

There appears to have been a breakthrough in talks between the Oneida Nation, the state of New York and two counties over the tribe's unsettled land claim.

The parties met Tuesday after a long impasse. The Supreme Court has ruled the tribe is owed compensation for 250,000 acres of stolen land but the parties have not been able to settle.

The case's special master has criticized both sides for the delay.
