Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.) wrote President Bush last week to ask for clemency to two Navajo man involved in the 1989 riot that contributed to the conviction and prison sentence of former tribal chairman Peter MacDonald.

Ned McKensley and Donald Benally are currently serving their terms in federal prison. Bingaman said they have served the majority of their time and are due to be released.

Former President Bill Clinton granted clemency to MacDonald on his final day in office. MacDonald was convicted of, among other charges, inciting the riot which led to the deaths of two of his supporters.

MacDonald was not present at the Window Rock, Arizona, incident.
