Tribes seek help from Congress

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 2002

Supreme Court Justice Steven Breyer gave a well-received speech at the National Congress of American Indians in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday.

Tribal leaders said it was historic and an honor to receive a visit from the Justice, a first ever for NCAI. Breyer recounted his experiences touring tribal courts last year and listened intently when Alaska Native elder Marc Jacobs Jr. recounted his struggles to have Native law recognized.
