Private landowners being sued by the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin have hired the law firm of White & Case to defend themselves, an expense being picked up by the state of New York.

The Wisconsin Oneida filed 20 lawsuits after the New York Oneida agreed to settle a joint land claim to 250,000 acres in New York state. The Wisconsin Oneida and the Oneida of Ontario, Canada, were not included in negotiations to settle the claim.

Of the 20 property owners, six signed on with the law firm, which is based in New York City.
