Law firm gets new anti-tribal clients

FRIDAY, MARCH 29, 2002 The law firm helping three Connecticut towns fight Pequot tribes has been retained by another group of municipalities worried about federal recognition and casinos. A reported 10 communities have hired Perkins Coie, a Washington, D.C., law firm. The firm has been hired by other towns to oppose the federal recognition bids of two Pequot tribes and the land-into-trust applications of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation. The firm is also helping a Florida city investigate the Seminole Tribe's business dealings. For the land-into-trust lawsuit, the towns had spent $1.2 million in legal and other fees. Now that the tribe has withdrawn its request, the case has been dropped and the towns now want the federal government to reimburse the costs. Get the Story:
