The Department of Interior's top inspector has recommended a new official be put in charge of law enforcement, reports The Palm Springs Desert Sun.

A January 14 investigation prepared by Inspector General urges Secretary Norton to create a deputy assistant secretary for law enforcement. This official would oversee department-wide law duties, including those at the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

The recommendation was contained in a report which found the department's law enforcement capabilities to be in a crisis. No one listened when suggestions were made to improve the system, the paper says.

The paper also reports that many officials have little or no law enforcement training or experience.
