Probe into contested Pequot law sought

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 2, 2002

The leaders of three Connecticut towns have asked their Congressman to start an investigation of the 1983 Mashantucket Pequot Settlement Act.

The towns of Ledyard, North Stonington and Preston believe the law defines the borders of the tribe's reservation once and for all. A federal appeals court, however, has disagreed, affirming the tribe's right to seek trust lands.

Nevertheless, the towns want the General Accounting Office, the investigative arm of Congress, to review the law. They have asked Rep. Rob Simmons (R-Conn.) to request the probe.
