Its that time of the year again--the Gathering of Nations Powwow. Opening today in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the powwow is in its 17th year. Artwork © Michael Horse A bit of the fun was previewed last night at the Miss Indian World pageant. Hosted by actor/artist Michael Horse, currently seen on the WB network's Roswell, and his wife Sandra, 21 beautiful, proud, and intelligent Native women from throughout the country displayed their speaking ability, personality, and knowledge of their tribes' traditions before a packed house at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

Seminole Chief Jim Billie and his group also performed, bringing along their alligator for onlookers to enjoy. Luckily, Billie did not attempt a gator wrestling match. A improptu session resulted in the Chief losing his right ring hand finger in February of this year.

Today, the main show begins at the University of New Mexico's Pit Arena. Normally the home of the school's hoop-shooting Lobos, the floor will see plenty of action over the weekend, with dancers competing for high honors and cash prizes.

As for the 21 hopefuls, the new Miss Indian World will be crowned Saturday night. Like last year's winner, Mitzi Tolino (White Mountain Apache/Navajo), the lucky woman will serve as Indian Country's ambassador to the world.
