Pine Ridge ready to receive funds

OCTOBER 10, 2000

Herb Wounded Head says the Oglala Lakota Tribe at Pine Ridge is ready to receive federal funding as part of its designation as an empowerment zone.

Wounded Head says his office is organized and ready to receive money. As part of the designation, the tribe is to receive $2 million a year for 10 years.

But Congress has only authorized money for two years so far. The designation was made in 1999 by President Clinton, whose visit to Pine Ridge was the first a President has made since 1936.

Andrew Cuomo, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, recently came to Pine Ridge to release a progress report on efforts to improve conditions on the reservation. The report said improvements had been made in housing, education, and economic development.
