N.M. sends compacts to Interior

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 10, 2001

Bypassing the legal objections of two fellow tribes, New Mexico Attorney General Patricia Madrid and 11 tribes have come to an out-of-court settlement on $91 million in back payments owed to the state.

The settlement, announced by Madrid on Tuesday, was preceded by the state sending the compacts to the Department of Interior last Friday. The Interior must approve the agreements to make them legal.

The compacts, which cap revenue-sharing rates at 8 percent, were threatened by Pojoaque Pueblo and the Mescalero Apache Nation, who opposed making the back payments. They challenged the agreement in federal court, causing a delay that now appears to be lifted.
