Non-Indian employment protested

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2001

Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation tribal members on Monday held a protest outside tribal headquaters, saying leaders have hired too many non-Indians.

So far, three non-Yavapais have left their jobs or been fired as profits from the Arizona tribe's once profitable casino have dipped due to competition. The protesters are now calling for the removal of another employee and for a recall of President Clinton Pattea and council member Larry Boka.

The protesters say standards for tribal employment are too high. Of 31 administrative positions, only one tribal member is employed.
