TUESDAY, OCTOBER 30, 2001

The Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma on Monday began selling its own car tags to members.

The tags are available to members who live in the tribe's 14-county jurisdiction in northeastern Oklahoma. They cost $75 for new cars and go as low as $10 for cars 17 years of age or older.

According to a spokesperson for the tribe, sales were good.

Other tribes in the state offer car tags, but the Cherokee is the larges to do so. The money will be used for self-goverhment purposes but a significant portion -- 38 percent -- will go to area schools based on the Cherokee student population.

Five percent will go to local law enforcement including the tribe's.
