The Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut has increased per capita payments to tribal members to as high as $28,000 a year, tribal members told The New London Day.

Elders, who fought for the tribe's bid to gain federal recognition, will receive more money. Those 62 and older will get the largest increase.

Tribal members under the age of 18 will get less. There was concern that the money would diminish the work ethic among youth, said tribal members.

Still, by the time a Mohegan infant reaches the age of 18, he or she will have more than $400,000 in trust at the current rate.

The tribe owns the successful Mohegan Sun casino and just opened a $1.1 billion expansion. The tribal council in May had increased the stipent from $10,000 to $12,000.
