Group protestscontributions by tribes

JANUARY 12, 2001

A group called Citizens United for Baseball in Minnesota (CUBM) has released a study alleging that Indian tribes are influencing state legislators to restrict non-tribal gaming in Minnesota.

As a result, they say efforts to finance construction of a new baseball stadium for the Minnesota Twins with profits from a non-Indian gaming facility are doomed. CUBM alleges that five Tribal PACs (Political Action Committees) who gave over $330,000 in the last election cycle will curtail the stadium and is calling for hearings on a new bill to fund it.

In 1997, a stadium bill was defeated in the Legislature.

PAC contributions made by tribes are not illegal in the state of Minnesota. The contributions made to more than half of legislators by tribal PACs were mainly $1000.
