NOVEMBER 22, 2000 A proposal to open a french fry plant on the Navajo Nation is being questioned because the facility where it would be located might not be ready, says a tribal councilor. Councilman Wallace Charley is looking into the Navajo Agricultural Products Industry, who earlier said this month they were ready for the fry plant. He wants a complete financial statment of NAPI. The full french fry plant proposal is to be considered by the council next month. The proposal is a joint venture between the tribe and RDO Offutt of Minnesota. In an editorial published in the November 20 issue of The Navajo Times, Winona LaDuke, her business partner and domestic partner, Kevin Gasco, and Georgia Ann Baker, urged the tribe to consider fully the proposal, in light of a report they made on the environmental impact of RDO's operations. As an example, LaDuke says that chemicals used by RDO have been proven to cause deformities, abnormalities, and death in frogs. Get the Story:
