Kickapoo homeowners hit with tax bills

NOVEMBER 29, 2000

Some homeowners of the Kickapoo Tribe of Kansas have been told they owe taxes to the County of Brown, dating back to 1999.

The tribal members own homes on land that is not held in trust. As such, it can be taxed per a 1998 Supreme Court decision.

That decision said that state and local governments can impose taxes on lands which were sold to non-Indians but eventually reacquired by tribes. The homeowners in question purchased their land from the Kickapoo Housing Authority.

The tribal members are being urged to pay the bills but protest them so that they can get a hearing on the matter. They can also seek to have their parcels brought into trust.
