Tribe clarifies position on Pequot Fund

NOVEMBER 30, 2000

The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation on Wednesday said it doesn't plan on giving some of its own money to three local towns, contrary to published comments made by a tribal councilor.

A tribal spokesman said councilor Michael Thomas was misunderstood when he was asked if the tribe was willing to give money directly to the towns of Ledyard, North Stonington, and Preston. The Mohegan Tribe gives $500,000 annually to the town of Montville and Thomas appeared to say the tribe was willing to do the same. His comments were published in The New London Day and the story was sent out on Associated Press wires throughout the country.

But the tribes says what they really want is that the towns get more of the Pequot Fund. The Pequot Fund is given every year to municipalities throughout the state, based on a formula involving tax-free property, need, and other factors.

The tribes currently receive less of the money than communities further away from the tribe's casino in southeastern Connecticut.
