Ojibwe casino moves forward

JANUARY 22, 2001

The Bureau of Indian Affairs on Friday said an off-reservation casino proposed by three Ojibwe tribes in Wisconsin wouldn't significantly affect the local area.

The BIA still has to approve the entire project, however, as does the state's governor. Land for the three tribes aso has to be taken into trust.

The BIA in 1998 denied the tribes' trust land application. The decision resulted in Senate hearings on whether campaign contributions influenced the decision but in the end Secretary of Interior Bruce Babbitt was cleared of any wrondgoing.
