Montana Indian counties among poorest

DECEMBER 8, 2000 Confirming an earlier Indianz.Com report, the Associated Press notes that the poorest counties in Montana are located within reservations. Of the nation's counties, three in Montana ranked among the 100 poorest as of 1997, the year for which the Census last estimated poverty. Glacier, Roosevelt, and Big Horn Counties all high poverty rates greater than 29 percent. All three are predominantly located within reservations. The national poverty rate as of 1999 was 11.8 percent. Get the Story:
