Menominee casino gets thumbs up

JANUARY 4, 2001 The Bureau of Indian Affairs last week gave approval to an off-reservation casino proposed by the Menominee Nation of Wisconsin. The state already signed an agreement with the tribe over the operation of the casino in Kenosha. Governor Tommy Thompson said he wouldn't oppose the casino if local and federal officials gave their approval. But since he may leave his position for a job with the George W. Bush administration, his successor, Lt. Gov. Scott McCallum, may have final say. McCallum has opposed expanded gaming in the state. Get the Story:
