The New Mexico Senate Rules Committee on Wednesday endorsed a joint legislative resolution calling on Governor Gary Johnson (R) to reopen negotiations on gaming compacts with tribes in the state.

While most Democrats endorsed the idea, some Republicans said the tribes first have to live up to their existing compact. That compact requires the tribes to share 16 percent of their overall revenues with the state, a rate the tribes say is too high and have refused to pay.

A compact reducing the rate to around 8 percent was proposed last year but killed. Attorney General Patricia Madrid has sued the 12 gaming tribes as a result of their non-compliance.
