Tribes have hope despite new Governor

FEBRUARY 12, 2001

Leaders of Wisconsin's tribes hope they can meet with new Governor Scott McCallum and give him a better understanding of Indian issues despite his stance against expansion of tribal casinos.

McCallum has said he will not approve pending proposals for off-reservation casinos. A spokesperson for McCallum said his anti-gaming position won't affect casinos already in place.

Compacts for the tribes expire in 2003. The tribes want to have more say in how money they contribute to the state is spent.

Investors for the Menominee Nation, whose off-reservation proposal in Hudson is expected to be rejected by McCallum, hope to change his mind.
