FEBRUARY 2, 2001

The success of the welfare to work program of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation was one of the topics of discussion at an employment conference the tribe held on Thursday.

The tribe held the conference to focus on employee retention. The tribe's financially successful casino, Foxwoods, has employed more than 200 former welfare recipients and says they have a retention rate of 90 percent.

Keynote speaker Rodney Carroll, a UPS executive on loan to the national Welfare to Work Partnership, noted the struggles he had in convincing UPS to hire welfare recipients and said the program has had a positive result, employing more than 50,000 former welfare recipients.
