MARCH 21, 2001

New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson (R) on Tuesday said casinos owned by Pojoaque Pueblo and the Mescalero Apache Nation will be shut down unless tribal leaders sign recently approved gaming compacts.

The tribes have been holding out on the compacts because they object to some of its provisions. But Johnson said the federal government will shut them down for operating Class III games without a compact should they continue to object.

Other tribes, such as the Santee Sioux of Nebraska, have operated Class III games in opposition of court orders and the government.
