Tribe to cut back fisheries plan

APRIL 23, 2001

In response to non-Indian pressure, the Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut on Saturday said it will scale back its $10 million fisheries business.

The tribe has been stepping up its efforts to enter the aquaculture business, but ran into opposiition when it proposed to place lobster traps and other fishing equipment in federal waters in ishers Island Sound. Local fisherman and politicans opposed it, saying it would limit traditional access to fishing grounds.

The state is also voicing objections to the plan. So the tribe will meet with the US Army Corps of Engineers today to scale back or possibly withdraw the permits it has been seeking.

In an editorial, The New London Day says the Army Corps should hold a public hearing on the issue.
