APRIL 26, 2001

The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation is the one of the largest taxpayers in the Connecticut town of Ledyard for the year 2000.

The town's list of taxable properties, called the grand list, puts the tribe's holdings at $15.8 million. One of the tribe's holding company is third at $13.7 million.

Combined, the assessments are slightly higher than the number one taxpayer, Dow Chemical Co., with $25.1 million.

Along with two neighboring communities and Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, the town of Ledyard is suing the Department of Interior for agreeing to add land to the tribe's reservation. The 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals last fall sided in favor of the federal government, but the state has asked the Supreme Court to review the case.
