APRIL 27, 2001 The Rock County Board on Thursday rejected a proposal offered by the Bad River Ojibwe and St. Croix Ojibwe to build a casino in Beloit, Wisconsin. The Beloit city council had already approved the deal but the county voted 15-13 against it. The city and the county would share $145 million over 10 years. The tribes and their backers plan to move forward with the proposal. Should they succeed, one band will close down its existing casino, which they hope will convince Governor Scott McCallum to sign off on the deal. If the Bureau of Indian Affairs agrees to take land into trust for the bands, McCallum must approve it. McCallum said he opposes the expansion of gaming in the state. Get the Story:
