APRIL 5, 2001

An Oklahoma District Attorney on Wednesday said the car tags being issued by the United Keetoowah Band are legal.

Tribal members have been stopped by state police because of a dispute over the legality of certain car tags. A rival group who calls themselves the "Cherokee Nation," or the CNO, is producing its own tags.

The tribe is not connected with the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, who are also planning to issue their own tags. A judge has temporarily ordered the so-called CNO to stop issuing car tags.

According to the homepage of the CNO, the group wants to abolish the federally recognized Cherokee Nation. The CNO claims they are the rightful Cherokee government.
