MAY 14, 2001 The Stockbridge-Munsee Mohican Tribe of Wisconsin on Friday announced plans to develop a casino in the Catskills region of New York, having signed an agreement with a gaming firm last month. The tribe also said they asked Governor George Pataki to enter into negotiations on its land claim. The tribe's aboriginal territory is in New York, although not in the Catskills region, about 90 miles north of New York City. Pataki's office on Friday said it had not received any proposal to negotiate. The tribe hopes to enter a legislative settlement, which would avoid land-into-trust pitfalls. The tribe has entered into a partnership with Trading Cove Associates. The firm helped the Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut gain federal recognition and open its financially successful casino there. The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe of New York is seeking to establish a casino in the Catskills. The tribe is partnered with Park Place Entertainment, the largest gaming company in the world. Get the Story:
